BMW 5 Series LED Interior Lights: Bulb Sizes for E60, F10 and G30

The 5 Series cabin ages faster than the rest of the car. BMW kept warm incandescent bulbs in the dome, door and footwell lights well into the G30 years, and after a decade of use they turn the kind of yellow that makes a 2016 car feel like a 2006 one.

Swapping them takes maybe twenty minutes with a plastic trim tool. Getting the right bulbs is where most people go wrong, because the 5 Series changed socket types between generations and again at the facelifts.

What fits which generation

Here is what the three common generations use. Measure before you order, especially on trunk and license plate lights, since those changed mid-cycle on the F10.

Position E60 (2003-2010) F10 (2010-2017) G30 (2017-2023)
Dome light 42mm festoon 42mm festoon 42mm festoon
Map / reading T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W)
Footwell T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W)
Vanity mirror 36mm festoon 36mm festoon 36mm festoon
Trunk 42mm festoon T10 or festoon T10 (W5W)
License plate 36mm festoon 36mm festoon 36mm festoon

The trunk light is the one that catches people. Early F10s used a festoon, later ones switched to a T10 wedge. Pull the housing and look before you order a kit.

The CANBUS thing, briefly

BMW checks the resistance of each bulb and throws a dashboard warning when it sees a load it does not expect. A cheap LED draws far less power than the incandescent bulb it replaced, so the car assumes the bulb is dead.

Either buy bulbs with built-in resistors or fit a load resistor in parallel. For interior lights we use CANBUS-compatible bulbs where the socket allows it, which keeps the warning off without splicing anything into the loom.

One more thing: LED bulbs only work in one direction. If a bulb does not light after you fit it, pull it out, turn it 180 degrees and push it back in. It will work. No amount of wiggling fixes polarity.

Doing the swap

Work with the car off and the interior light switch in the off position so nothing gets hot while you have your fingers in the housing.

Start with the dome light. The lens clips in on one side. Slide a plastic trim tool under the edge and it pops out without much force. Behind it you will find the bulb holder. Twist or pull depending on the fitting.

The footwell lights sit under the dash on both sides. On the F10 you can reach them without removing any trim. On the G30 the passenger side is easier after you drop the glovebox a few centimetres.

Vanity lights are the fiddliest. The lens has a small notch on the door side. Work from there and use your fingernail rather than a screwdriver, because the plastic scratches easily.

Do you need the whole kit

For most 5 Series owners, a kit that covers dome, both footwells, vanity, trunk and license plate is cheaper than buying individual bulbs. The kits are built for a specific model and year, so the socket types and quantities already match the car.

If you only care about the cabin and never look at the trunk, buying six bulbs individually is fine too. Just match the sizes in the table above.

Frequently asked questions

Will LED interior lights drain my battery? No. LEDs draw less current than the incandescent bulbs they replace, so the load on the battery goes down, not up. The car's own battery saver logic still shuts the interior lights off after the same delay.

Can I mix colours? You can, though it looks odd. Most people run one colour throughout. If you want white up front and something warmer in the rear footwells, that is your call, but the difference is noticeable.

Why does one side of the car glow dimmer? Check the bulb orientation first. If that is not it, one of the bulbs may have a poor contact in the socket. Remove it, clean the contacts, refit.

Will this void my warranty? Replacing bulbs is a consumable change, not a modification to the vehicle's systems. Keep the original bulbs and you can put them back before any dealer visit if you are worried about it.

Picking the colour

White 6000K is the default and what most people expect from a modern car. Warm white suits older interiors and hides dust better. Ice blue and purple are for people who want the ambient look, and they photograph well at night.

If you are unsure, white. You can always change the footwell bulbs later for a two tone look, and those are the easiest to reach.
