The Octavia is the car people buy when they want a Golf with more boot space. It shares most of the mechanicals, and most of the interior bulbs, which makes this an easy upgrade.
Skoda used the same bulb fittings across the Volkswagen Group, so if you have done a Golf or a Passat before, you already know the drill.
MK2 (1Z, 2004-2013)
| Position | Bulb type |
|---|---|
| Front dome / map | T10 (W5W) |
| Rear dome | 42mm festoon |
| Footwell (front) | T10 (W5W) |
| Vanity mirror | 36mm festoon |
| Trunk | 42mm festoon |
| Glovebox | T10 (W5W) |
The MK2 trunk light is a festoon in a housing that clips out. It is easier than the front dome, which needs a trim tool and a bit of patience.
MK3 (5E, 2013-2020)
| Position | Bulb type |
|---|---|
| Front dome / map | T10 (W5W) |
| Rear dome | 42mm festoon |
| Footwell (front) | T10 (W5W) |
| Vanity mirror | 36mm festoon |
| Trunk | T10 (W5W) |
| Glovebox | T10 (W5W) |
The MK3 changed the trunk light from a festoon to a wedge. Buying a MK2 kit for a MK3 leaves you with one bulb that will not fit anywhere useful.
MK4 (NX, 2020+)
| Position | Bulb type |
|---|---|
| Front dome / map | T10 (W5W) |
| Rear dome | 42mm festoon |
| Footwell (front) | T10 (W5W) |
| Vanity mirror | 36mm festoon |
| Trunk | T10 (W5W) |
| Glovebox | T10 (W5W) |
The MK4 uses LED modules in the higher trim ambient lighting. Those are not serviceable. The bulb positions in the table are separate from the ambient strips.
CANBUS on a Skoda
Same as any Volkswagen Group car. The body control module watches bulb load, and a plain LED in a monitored position will produce a warning.
Fit CANBUS-compatible bulbs in the dome, footwell and trunk positions. Vanity and glovebox are usually unmonitored.
If you have already fitted plain LEDs and see a warning, swap the dome bulbs first. That resolves it in most Octavias.
Doing the job
Front dome on the MK3 and MK4: the lens has clips at the front edge. Trim tool, gentle lift, the housing comes down on its connector.
Rear dome: 42mm festoon in a spring holder. Push one end, lift the other.
Footwell lights are under the dash. On a left hand drive car the driver's side is on the left. Obvious, but people do ask.
Trunk light on a MK3 or MK4 is a wedge in the side trim of the boot. On the MK2 it is a festoon in a housing that pulls out.
Vanity lights: 36mm festoon. Two per side on the higher trims, which doubles the fiddly part of the job.
Colour
White is what most Octavia owners fit. It suits the grey and black interiors and looks factory.
Warm white works on the beige or brown interior options. Skoda's lighter interiors look better with warm white.
Ice blue is common on the vRS models, where the interior already has sporty accents. It fits the styling.
Frequently asked questions
Will these fit a Golf or a Leon? The bulb types are often the same, but the quantities and some housings differ. Use the model-specific kit.
Do I need to disconnect the battery? No. Turn the interior light switch off and nothing will be live while you work.
Why is one bulb dimmer? Check polarity by rotating the bulb 180 degrees. If that does not fix it, clean the socket contacts.
Can I replace the ambient lighting strips? No. Those are LED modules built into the trim on higher trims.
