Toyota interiors are engineered to last, and the bulbs reflect that. They are standard types, easy to reach, and Toyota's bulb monitoring rarely complains about a well made LED.
That makes these two of the simpler vehicles to upgrade. The main thing to get right is quantity, because both have more positions than people expect.
RAV4 (XA40 and XA50)
| Position | 2013-2018 | 2019+ |
|---|---|---|
| Front dome / map | T10 (168/194) | T10 (168/194) |
| Rear dome | 31mm festoon | 31mm festoon |
| Footwell (front) | T10 (168/194) | T10 (168/194) |
| Vanity mirror | 31mm festoon | 31mm festoon |
| Cargo | T10 (168/194) | T10 (168/194) |
| Glovebox | T10 (168/194) | T10 (168/194) |
The rear dome uses a short 31mm festoon, not the 36 or 42mm you find on European cars. Ordering the wrong length is the most common mistake on a RAV4.
The 2019+ added a second cargo light on some trims. Look in the boot before ordering.
Highlander (XU50 and XU70)
| Position | 2014-2019 | 2020+ |
|---|---|---|
| Front dome / map | T10 (168/194) | T10 (168/194) |
| Second row dome | 31mm festoon | 31mm festoon |
| Third row (where fitted) | T10 (168/194) | T10 (168/194) |
| Footwell | T10 (168/194) | T10 (168/194) |
| Vanity mirror | 31mm festoon | 31mm festoon |
| Cargo | T10 (168/194) | T10 (168/194) |
The Highlander has more interior positions than most SUVs because of the third row. On a seven seat model you will want bulbs there too, otherwise the back of the cabin stays dim.
Does a Toyota throw bulb warnings
Usually not, with one exception. Vehicles with the multi-information display that shows individual bulb status can flag a very low draw LED. It is more common on the Highlander than the RAV4.
If you want to avoid it entirely, fit CANBUS bulbs in the dome positions. Those are the ones the display watches.
Fitting them
RAV4 front dome is a push-fit lens with a clip at the front. Trim tool under the edge, gentle pressure, it drops.
The rear dome on both models is a short festoon. It sits in a spring loaded holder. Push the bulb towards one end to compress the spring, then lift the other end out. Refitting is the reverse, and it is easier than it sounds once you have done one.
Footwell lights on the RAV4 are under the dash and reachable from the seat. On the Highlander the second row footwells are under the front seats and need a torch to see properly.
Cargo lights on both are T10 and take seconds. Do those last, they are the easy win.
Colour choice
White is the default and what most Toyota owners fit. The interiors are grey or beige and white suits both.
Warm white works better on beige interiors specifically. If you have the tan leather option, warm white blends in and looks more factory than white does.
Ice blue is popular in the RAV4 among younger owners, particularly on the hybrid trims. Purple is rare on Toyotas, and that is probably fine.
Frequently asked questions
Will LEDs work in a RAV4 hybrid? Yes. The interior lighting circuit is the same as the non-hybrid. The hybrid system does not affect the bulbs.
How many bulbs do I need for a Highlander? A seven seat model typically needs around twelve positions including the third row. Count yours before ordering.
Is it worth changing the cargo light? Yes. It is the light you use most and it takes two minutes.
Will these fit a Lexus RX? The RX shares some fittings with the Highlander but not all. Use the Lexus listing to be safe.
