BMW SUVs get used harder than the sedans and it shows in the interior lighting. Ten years of school runs and dog trips and those factory bulbs are putting out more orange than white.
Both the X3 and X5 are straightforward to upgrade once you know the fittings. The generations differ enough that ordering by model year matters more than most people expect.
X3 (E83, F25, G01)
| Position | E83 (2004-2010) | F25 (2011-2017) | G01 (2018+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front dome / map | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) |
| Rear dome | 42mm festoon | 42mm festoon | 42mm festoon |
| Footwell (front) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) |
| Vanity mirror | 36mm festoon | 36mm festoon | 36mm festoon |
| Cargo | 42mm festoon | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) |
| Glovebox | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) |
The F25 cargo light is a wedge. The E83 used a festoon. That is the change people trip over when ordering used parts or old stock kits.
X5 (E70, F15, G05)
| Position | E70 (2007-2013) | F15 (2014-2018) | G05 (2019+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front dome / map | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) |
| Rear dome | 42mm festoon | 42mm festoon | 42mm festoon |
| Footwell (front) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) |
| Footwell (rear) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) |
| Vanity mirror | 36mm festoon | 36mm festoon | 36mm festoon |
| Cargo | 42mm festoon | 42mm festoon | T10 (W5W) |
| Third row (7 seat) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) | T10 (W5W) |
Seven seat X5s have third row lights. If you carry passengers back there, do those too. Otherwise the third row stays as dim as it came from the factory.
The BMW warning light
BMW monitors bulb resistance and will throw a check control message when it sees a load it does not expect. A plain LED in a monitored position triggers it every time.
Use CANBUS-compatible bulbs. On the X3 and X5 that means the dome, footwell and cargo positions as a minimum. The vanity and glovebox circuits are usually not monitored.
If you see the message and want it gone, swapping the dome bulbs for CANBUS versions handles most cases. You do not need to do anything in software.
Fitting them
X3 front dome: trim tool at the rear edge, the lens drops. On the G01 the housing is larger and the clip is firmer.
X5 rear dome: 42mm festoon in a spring holder. Same on all three generations.
Footwell lights on an X5 are under the dash and reachable from the seat. The rear footwells are under the front seats and you will need a torch.
Cargo light on the E70 and F15 is a festoon in the side trim. On the G05 it is a wedge. Different housing, same two minute job.
Vanity lights: 36mm festoon, one per side on most trims, two per side on some. Check before ordering.
Colour
White is the most common choice and matches the factory look on the higher trims.
Warm white suits the beige and brown interiors, which BMW offered widely on the X5. It keeps the cabin feeling warm rather than clinical.
Ice blue works on the X3 and X5 with the ambient lighting package, where blue is already one of the interior accent colours. Purple less so, but it suits black interiors.
Frequently asked questions
Will the kit fit a seven seat X5? Check the listing. Some kits cover the third row, some do not. The third row bulbs are the same T10 type either way.
Can I replace the ambient lighting in the doors? No. Those are LED modules in the trim panels.
Is it safe to use LEDs in the cargo light? Yes. The cargo circuit handles the lower draw without issue.
Do I need to code anything after fitting LEDs? No. CANBUS bulbs keep the car happy without any coding changes.
