Mercedes C-Class Interior LED Upgrade: W204 and W205 Bulb Sizes

Mercedes cabins hold up well. The interior lights do not.

On the W204 and W205, the factory bulbs are incandescent and they dim with age. By the time a C-Class is eight or nine years old, the dome light has that tired orange cast that makes the whole interior look shabbier than it is.

The good news is that most of the bulbs are standard types. The bad news is that Mercedes is fussy about electrical loads, so a cheap LED will trip a warning.

Bulb sizes by generation

Position W204 (2007-2014) W205 (2014-2021)
Front dome / map T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W)
Rear dome 42mm festoon 42mm festoon
Footwell T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W)
Vanity mirror 36mm festoon 36mm festoon
Trunk 42mm festoon T10 (W5W)
Glovebox T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W)

Two things worth knowing before you order.

First, the trunk light on the W205 is a wedge, not a festoon, unlike the W204. People order the older kit and end up one bulb short.

Second, if your car has the ambient lighting package with the strip lighting in the doors and dash, those are LED modules soldered into the trim. You cannot replace them with bulbs, and nobody sells a kit that does. The bulb positions in the table above are separate from the ambient strips.

The warning light problem

Mercedes monitors bulb resistance more aggressively than most. Fit a plain LED with no resistor and you will likely get a "check bulb" message the next time the car runs a cold check.

The fix is either a bulb with an integrated resistor or a CANBUS-compatible bulb. For the C-Class we supply CANBUS-ready bulbs for the positions that need them, which keeps the check quiet.

If you already have plain LEDs and see a warning, you have two options: swap the offending position for a CANBUS bulb, or add a load resistor. Start with the dome and trunk positions, since those are the ones Mercedes watches most closely.

How the install actually goes

Pop the lens on the front dome first. On the W204 it is held by two spring clips at the front edge. Push the lens back slightly and it drops down. On the W205 there is a small slot on the passenger side you can get a trim tool into.

The rear dome is easier. It comes out with a firm pull from one edge.

Footwell lights are under the dash, one per side. The driver's side on a right hand drive car is the awkward one, but you can usually reach it by lying across the seat rather than removing trim.

The glovebox light is worth doing while you are in there. It is a single T10 and it takes thirty seconds once the glovebox is open and dropped past its stop.

Vanity lights take the longest. The lens on the W204 has a tiny notch on the hinge side. Work from there with a fingernail. Do not use a flathead screwdriver; the plastic mars easily and you will see it every time you flip the visor down.

White, warm white, or something else

W205 interiors were designed around a cool white. If you fit warm white, it will look mismatched against the ambient strips if you have them.

W204 interiors suit either. Warm white blends with the older dash materials and looks less "added on". White looks sharper but also makes the age of the plastics more obvious.

Ice blue is popular on the C-Class because it sits close to some of Mercedes' own ambient colour options. Purple less so, but it does photograph well.

Do you need a kit or individual bulbs

Count the positions you actually want to change. If it is just the dome and footwells, buy individual bulbs. If you want everything including vanity and trunk, a model-specific kit is usually cheaper and arrives with the right mix.

The kits are built per model and year, so the socket types and counts already match. That matters more on Mercedes than most brands because of how often the trunk and rear dome fittings changed.

Frequently asked questions

Will LEDs cause a bulb warning on a C-Class? They can, if the bulb has no resistor. Use CANBUS-compatible bulbs for the monitored positions and the warning stays off.

Can I replace the ambient door lighting? No. Those are LED modules built into the door trim, not serviceable bulbs.

Is it safe to leave the interior lights on? The car cuts them off after a set time regardless of bulb type. LEDs draw less power, so you are no worse off.

One bulb is dimmer than the others. Why? Check polarity first by rotating the bulb 180 degrees in the socket. If that does not fix it, clean the contacts.
