VW Golf LED Interior Lights (MK5, MK6, MK7) — Bulb Sizes & Install Guide

VW Golf LED Interior Lights (MK5, MK6, MK7) — Bulb Sizes & Install Guide

The Volkswagen Golf is one of the most modified cars in Europe, and the interior lighting is one of the first things owners change. The stock bulbs are dim and yellow, and on a car as cleanly designed as the Golf, that just looks wrong.

This guide covers the MK5 (2003-2008), MK6 (2008-2013), and MK7 (2012-2020), including the exact bulb sizes and the one measurement you must take before ordering.

Golf bulb sizes by generation

VW uses a frustrating mix of bulb sizes across generations, so this table is the part you actually need.

Position MK5 (2003-2008) MK6 (2008-2013) MK7 (2012-2020)
Dome light 42mm festoon 42mm festoon 42mm festoon
Map / reading lights T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W)
Footwell lights T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W) T10 (W5W)
Vanity mirror lights 31-36mm festoon 31-36mm festoon 36mm festoon
Trunk light Festoon or T10 Festoon or T10 T10 (W5W)

Measure the festoon before you order. VW switched between 41mm and 42mm festoon bulbs between generations and even between trims. A 42mm bulb in a 41mm socket is a fight to fit, and a 41mm bulb in a 42mm housing rattles and flickers. Thirty seconds with a ruler saves a reorder.

Does the Golf throw error codes with LEDs?

It depends on the trim. The base Golf usually doesn't monitor interior bulbs, so cheap LEDs work fine. But the higher-spec Golfs with the lighting package do monitor the cabin lights, and a standard LED can trigger a flicker or a bulb-out warning.

If you get a flicker after the swap, error-free CANBUS bulbs fix it. For the base trims, standard LEDs are usually fine, but error-free costs barely more and removes the guesswork.

Start with the footwell lights

If you only change one thing, change the footwells first. The stock footwell lights on the Golf are barely there, and a good T10 LED transforms the whole cabin at night. They are also the easiest to access. Just pop the panel under the dash and swap the bulb.

Step-by-step install

  1. Pop the lens covers off with a plastic trim tool or a thin card.
  2. Pull the old halogens out. Rock side to side if they are stuck.
  3. Insert the new LEDs. Plug and play.
  4. Test before closing. If a bulb doesn't light, flip it 180 degrees. Polarity matters on LEDs.
  5. Snap the covers back on.

What color temperature for a Golf?

5000K is the sweet spot for most Golfs. It is clean white without the harsh blue cast that can make the cabin feel cold. If you have the LED daytime running lights on a later MK7, 6000K ties the whole look together.

Frequently asked questions

Are LED interior lights legal on a Golf? Yes. Interior lighting is not regulated the way exterior lighting is.

Why does my trunk light stay on or flicker? Check the bulb size first. A loose 41mm bulb in a 42mm housing is the most common cause on Golfs.

Can I change the lights without tools? Mostly. A plastic trim tool helps, but a thin plastic card works for the lens covers.

The bottom line

The Golf is one of the easiest cars to upgrade to LED interior lighting, and the result is immediate. Measure your festoons, start with the footwells, and the whole cabin is done in twenty minutes.
