How to Install LED Interior Lights: Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Upgrading your car interior lights from dull yellow halogens to crisp white LEDs is one of the easiest and most satisfying DIY mods you can do. With basic tools and about 30 minutes, you can completely transform your cabin. Here is everything you need to know.
Tools You Will Need
- Plastic trim removal tool: Essential to avoid scratching your interior panels. A set costs under 0.
- Small flathead screwdriver: For prying out stubborn lens covers.
- Microfiber cloth: To handle bulbs without getting skin oils on them.
- Your LED kit: Make sure it is the correct kit for your specific vehicle model and year.
Step 1: Dome / Map Light
Pry down the lens cover with your trim tool (look for a small notch). Pull out the old halogen, insert the LED. If it does not light up, flip it 180 degrees — LEDs are polarity-sensitive. Snap the lens back and test.
Step 2: Door Courtesy Lights
Located at the bottom of each door panel. Pry out from the bottom edge, replace bulb, test by opening/closing the door.
Step 3: Footwell Lights
Under the dashboard on both driver and passenger sides. Wedge-type (T10) bulbs pull straight out.
Step 4: Glove Box & Trunk Lights
Glove box housing pries out at the top. Trunk light is on the ceiling or side panel. Replace and test each.
Common Issues
LED does not light: Flip 180 degrees.
Flickering or dashboard warning: CANBUS issue — use error-free bulbs.
