Jeep interiors are built for hose-down durability, and the lighting reflects it. The bulbs are simple, cheap and easy to reach, which is the opposite of most European cars.
That makes an LED swap about as straightforward as it gets. The catch is that Jeep used a mix of wedges and festoons depending on trim and model year, and the parts catalogs disagree with each other more often than they should.
Wrangler JK and JL
| Position | JK (2007-2018) | JL (2018+) |
|---|---|---|
| Front dome | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
| Rear dome (4 door) | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
| Footwell | T10 (194/168) | not fitted on most |
| Cargo light | 578 festoon | 578 festoon |
| License plate | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
| Glovebox | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
The JL dropped the footwell lights on most trims. If you order a JK kit for a JL, you will have two bulbs left over. Not a disaster, but worth knowing so you are not crawling under the dash looking for a socket that is not there.
The cargo light on both generations is a 578 festoon, a long double ended bulb. It is the brightest single light in the vehicle and arguably the one most worth changing, especially if you load gear in the dark.
Grand Cherokee WK2 and WL
| Position | WK2 (2011-2021) | WL (2021+) |
|---|---|---|
| Front dome / map | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
| Rear dome | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
| Footwell (front) | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
| Footwell (rear) | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
| Cargo | 578 festoon | 578 festoon |
| Vanity mirror | 36mm festoon | 36mm festoon |
| Glovebox | T10 (194/168) | T10 (194/168) |
The WK2 has more positions than the Wrangler, so a full kit is a bigger job but the bulbs are all standard types.
Does CANBUS matter on a Jeep
Less than on a German car, but not zero. The WK2 in particular will occasionally flash a bulb warning with a very low-draw LED. JL and WL are more forgiving.
If you want zero risk, fit CANBUS bulbs in the dome and cargo positions and plain LEDs everywhere else. Those two are the ones the vehicle checks.
The actual install
Wrangler is the easiest vehicle I have done this on. The dome lens is held by a single clip at the rear edge. Push it forward with a trim tool and it drops. There is no trim to remove, no harness to unplug.
The cargo light on a 4 door JK sits in the roll bar area. The lens twists out. Same on the JL.
Grand Cherokee takes a bit longer because of the footwell lights. Front footwells are reachable from the seat. The rear ones are under the front seats and you will want a short screwdriver or just your fingers.
The vanity lights are the same fiddly festoon fittings you find on most cars. Small notch on the hinge side, fingernail, patience.
Colour choice
Wrangler owners tend to go one of two ways. Either plain white, because the interior is utilitarian and a clean white light just works, or something louder like ice blue or purple because the vehicle is already a statement.
Grand Cherokee buyers mostly pick white or warm white. Warm white suits the leather and wood trim on the higher trims better than cool white does.
If you off-road at night and use the interior lights to find gear, white is the practical answer. Warm white is easier on the eyes when you are tired, but the difference is smaller than people claim.
What to check before ordering
Confirm the model year, not just the generation. Jeep made running changes mid-cycle, and the JL in particular changed some interior fittings between 2018 and 2021.
If your vehicle has the removable hardtop, the dome light housing is different from the soft top version on some years. Look at the housing before ordering rather than assuming the kit will match.
The cargo light is the most commonly missed bulb. Count it when you plan the job, otherwise you will be doing a second order.
Frequently asked questions
Will LED bulbs work with the Jeep's factory wiring? Yes. They are a direct replacement in the same socket. No wiring changes and no adapters on the standard positions.
My Wrangler has a hardtop and a soft top. Same bulbs? The dome housing differs on some years, but the bulb type in the table above covers both.
Why is one bulb not lighting? Polarity. Pull it, spin it 180 degrees, refit. LEDs only conduct one way.
Can I use these in a Gladiator? The Gladiator shares the JL cabin, so the interior positions and bulb types match the JL table.
